This town is situated at 6 km of Veynes, Montmaur is just under the moutain of Aurouze, the higher scree of Europe with the Pic de Bure (2709m).
This peak dominates a vast plateau on which the IRAM (Institute of Millimetric Radioastronomy) has installed an observatory and 6 parables of 15 m in diameter. Curiosity that does not fail to impress the hikers.
The climb to Bure begins with the hamlet of Sauvas, a pleasant picnic spot and one of the stages of the "Retrouvance" run by the NFB.
The territory of Montmaur, occupied since prehistoric times and the Gallo-Roman period, saw its buildings multiply from the twelfth century: Sainte Philomène Chapel, castle ...
